Coin collection

The oldest objects in the collection are coins from Ancient Greece and Rome. A significant part of the collection comprises coins minted in different periods in the territory of Latvia and 13th–17th-century Livonian coins minted in the territory of Estonia. The collection also includes a comprehensive collection of coins from the Free City of Riga and the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. Widely represented are interwar period coins issued by the Bank of Latvia and the circulation and collector coins of the restored lats and santīms, as well as their models. The collection continues to be supplemented by euro collector coins issued by the Bank of Latvia and special design two-euro coins.

A notable part of the coin collection is the 174 hoards of more than 80,000 coins found in the territory of Latvia.

Historically, the collection was based on the collection of the Riga Latvian Society Science Commission; in the 1920s and 1930s, it was supplemented with the collections of Voldemārs Miesiņš purchased by the Monuments Board and the Livonian coin collection donated by the Swedish consul in Denmark, Gustav Christgau. The coin hoards collected by the Monuments Board form the basis of the LNMH coin hoard collection today. In 2006, the coin collection was supplemented by the collection of coins minted in the territory of Latvia in 1570–1710 donated by the Baltic German collector and researcher Franziskus Pärn.

The collection also includes badges, insignia, medals and tokens as well as their descriptions.
