Medal collection

The medal collection is small in number; one of its oldest items being a 1641 medal by Sebastian Dadler commemorating the 20th anniversary of the capture of Riga by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. Noteworthy parts of the collection are the series of medals commemorating the Great Northern War and important events in history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russian Empire.

The collection was started in the interwar period by acquiring medals from the collections of numismatist Voldemārs Miesiņš, and over time it was supplemented with donations from collectors and medal designers. Medals by the artist Jānis Strupulis are a particularly extensive part of the collection; in 2006, the collection was supplemented by a collection of medals related to Latvian history donated by the Baltic German collector and researcher Franziskus Pärn.
